Over the course of a day on the job, a burly construction foreman, referred to only as "Boss," makes good on his name and bosses around a bulldozer, excavator, dump truck, and other vehicles. "Boss says, ‘Scoop that rock,' " and a loader moves in, "slides its bucket and takes a big scoop." Featuring the same brand of bold digital artwork seen in Drive, this book also makes excellent use of perspective to play up the machines' immensity and power; when Boss commands a crane to "Lift that stone!" readers get a worm's-eye view of the action from behind his boot, his shadow in the dirt showing him with his arms raised like a minor god. While no children appear until the end (when it's revealed that all this hard work has gone into making a community park), it's in no way a problem: Boss is the ultimate reader surrogate, wielding unquestioned power over the mightiest of machines. What more could a kid want? Ages 2–6. Unlike many similarly themed books, which focus on humans, this one details the part each truck plays in a single job, with the final spread showing a completed park. Throughout, the pointed finger and other hand signs of the African-American “Boss” direct the trucks to their respective duties. “Boss says, ‘Pour a slab.’ / And the mixer swings its trough and pours cement.” About half the time children are given the opportunity to guess which truck will be needed for the job before a page turn reveals the answer. The highlighted trucks include a bulldozer, excavator, loader, dump truck, compactor, mixer and crane. While the text does not rhyme, it has a welcome simplicity that suits younger readers just as well, even as it uses real vocabulary for the trucks and their parts. The computer-rendered illustrations, while sometimes seeming flat in perspective, nonetheless have crisp, clean lines with bold, rich colors and textures appropriate to earth, gravel and cement. The large format of the book itself, as well as alternating views of long shots and close-ups of trucks makes this a good choice for group sharing. Pair this with Sally Sutton’s Roadwork (2008) for a similar treatment of a different job site. (Picture book. 2-6)

Looong time No Speak

It's been something like 9 months since my last post! For all two of you out there watching and reading: sorry! But, I was creating a book as fast as my mousing finger could click and trying to get it done before the birth of our second son in April. Basically, it got done with a cover still due after Emory's arrival in our lives. It was all approved about a month ago and I've begun concepts on a next title.

But, I've also been working on a website design that brings back Stickman Studio on the web (has been defunct for awhile) and displays a combined portfolio of my book illustrations as well as my commercial work. The plan is to have this blog, the site, Twitter, YouTube and a Facebook page all working together.

Please view the teaser for Job Site on YouTube. After a tasty dinner in the Huntingburg Elementary Library and short business meeting, we talked about how to both write and create artwork for a picture book. You need a website. You know you do. Your publisher expects you to have one. They're not helping though. What are your options? Hire a web developer? Yes, you could. I don't begrudge anyone his due, especially if he has an education and experience in a field and knows programming languages. Add visual design to the mix, and that person is worth his weight in gold. The web is a complex field and it's hard to figure out sometimes.

But, if you are in my shoes, where books are probably an avocation, which you continue to work at to turn them into a vocation, and you make only a buck or two per copy, you can easily outspend income.

I'm offering design for a basic web site. I've made my living for 20 years in one form of design or graphic arts or another. I've had experience designing for the web, but do not have all the development (coding/programming) skills. So, I do the visual set up, focussing on who you are, how you want to represent yourself on the web—kind of like a book cover for YOU! Then, I work with a developer who is prepared to do the basic coding for a basic site, to get it up and live.

It worked for Joyce Moyer Hostetter, it worked for me; it can work for you.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nathanclement.blogspot.com/2009/09/you-need-website-yes-you-author.html' title='You Need a Website. I was struggling with this particular frame. Where does the horizon go? I actually found a great soul who blogs about art, art lessons and even perspective: Julie Duell. I asked for help. She was more than happy, and posted th

ese thoughts for me. Very helpful. I will maintain a permanent link for Julie on the right.

for online lessons.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nathanclement.blogspot.com/2009/09/helllp-perspective.html' title='Helllp! I took it and made it a book about construction equipment on a job site. Hence my title will be Job Site. This week, my main tech editor was at our house: my brother-in-law, Bob, who is a heavy equipment operator. Really, he's a crane operator. Since I don't seem to write about topics I actually know about, a tech editor is important. He had me reorder my storyboard to make a little more sense of what happens when on a job site.

My deadline is set for May 2010. I've tried to solve as many problems as possible at this stage rather than leaving it for the painting stage: light, perspective, objects in the background.
If this were going to become real published artwork, I see it as a full-page opposite a page of text. Probably not a cover, since I didn't leave any room for a title.

On to painting now. I'm going to try to project it onto my painting surface. We'll see....

Everything behind the girl (I'm calling her Cecelia) is actually a topiary form including the hedge wall with a scroll top and urn. Everything, except the Sinister Gardener (no offense JMH, the eternal mulcher), that is. I think I also want to add a real bird poking out of that pointy bush.

Before leaving this, I'll give you one of my problem-solving techniques: we are viewing this scene from below, which means a very low horizon line—like at Cecelia's waist. This makes us see the underneath side of the elements that are taller than she is and creates a sense of largeness and even foreboding. Also, the horizon is tipped, which seems to befuddle me while I'm drawing. So, I produced this guide which I taped behind my drawing to remind myself where the vanishing point for all these lines should be headed.

Old King Cole Was a Merry Old Toad—I mean Soul

I finished this illustration, slated for my portfolio, yesterday. I had to wait for areas in the fiddles and crickets/grasshopper to dry some in order to add some detail.
So, to remind you of what's going on here, I tried to interpret this with animals, and for some reason, a toad came to mind. Also, when doing some research into the history of the nursery rhyme (at Wikipedia, nothing too in-depth), they suggested that in the era that this may have been written, pipe could have meant a recorder or flute as much as a smoking pipe. And, since he had called for his fiddlers three, it could have very well meant that OKC was making music too.

And, if I've chosen a toad for the main character, then what other creatures would fit? His servants, the fiddlers naturally seemed fitting as crickets and grasshoppers. Those insects make music in the real world, don't they? And, is this a friendly arrangement, or are they pressed into service....?

See the frog-in-waiting in the background? He's providing a selection of pipes here. And the bowl is brought in to the king, balanced on a snail's shell. This is a fairy tale world, mind you.

I'm going to send this out to some children's magazines.

As far as technique, this is a charcoal drawing (see the below post), with oil tinting over the top. Not sure if I'll continue in this vein. I returned to it after several years, but had the same trouble now as I did then: keeping things from looking muddy. I'll probably just go to straight oils. See the upcoming illustration: Alone in the Topiary Garden—under drawing coming in the next day or so.

Oak Park Library Picks Drive Picture Book

My wife was speaking to long-time friend, Deneen in Berwin, IL (just outside of Chicago), who reports that Drive Peek at each stage in the process. Here you see #thumbnails of the #illustration idea.
I always say that no one can understand my thumbnails but me. That's OK because they're intended to help me work out my picture design and placement of elements. If an art director wants to see thumbnails, then I'll do cleaner, crisper thumbnails for him/her.

Next stage will be the under drawing. This will be an oil painting, so the drawing will be done to size (5.5"X8.5"—such as a book cover), then enlarged 200% in order to make painting it easier.

The narrative behind this is a girl briskly making her way out of a topiary garden full of odd characters and apparently also full of activity. I have some notes on my sketch in the upper right. While sketching, I had to decide what to include. What makes a good topiary? Flamingo, ostrich, urn, dolphin, dinosaur. I settled on the flamingo, ostrich, urn and way in the background, up high, will be an Egyptian, walking just like Egyptians always do.

Here's a help: the girl is in the lower right corner hustling out of the picture to the right. We, the viewers, are kind of low, looking up at her—that gives us a good underneath view of the topiaries. The ostrich (neck and head only) comes in from the left and is trying to nab her by the skirt.

That's all for now. Update on Old King Cole. I thought he'd be done and posted by tomorrow, but some of the small foreground detail is still wet, and it needs to dry so that I can finalize highlights and sharpen some edges.

Sorry for my cryptic opening and the pound signs (#). My blog is fed into my Twitter, and I want it to stay within 140 characters and contain good search term potential. The #s are supposed to help with that.

Rikki Panel 1 Finished

While developing my portfolio for children's illustration, I have drawn Rikki Tikki Tavi.

This is the first of three panels I plan to do. I haven't drawn in charcoal for many years and decided to get back into it to create a noir atmosphere and because it's so quick to get coverage in large areas, and easy to build up dark darks.

I haven't just drawn a full picture in a long time. I normally draw enough for a template for my digital work. As I drew, I relearned a lot of things. Trying to cast highlights back into shadow areas, which means to leave areas light or white. Going back and erasing out to get those highlights, or drawing back in with white pencil is just not as clean. Also, I had to get used to using one of those paper smudging stumps again in order to blend small detail areas. I think I was in junior high last time I fiddled with one of those.

One thing I'd like to overcome is the amount of sparkly white texture you can see throughout the dark areas. This was done on cold press 300 illustration board, medium texture, and I wonder if I went with the lighter texture, if it would still grab the charcoal as well.

The next pieces in this series will be Rikki first encountering the cobra Nag, in the garden under the tailor-bird's nest, and the deadly fight scene in the bathroom. We'll see.

The next posting should be the color piece I'm nearly done with for Old King Cole.

Blog Hints

In order for blog readers to more successfully find me, I've sign up for

Editor's Call

Boyds Mills Editor Larry Rosler calls to check on story book process.

Whilst working on final details for panel 1 of my illustration for Rikki Tikki Tavi (see posts below), the phone rang. The background colonnade will drop way back after it gets it oil washes.
   Now, for some candlelight.

Southern Kentucky (SOKY) Book Fest

I haven't said anything about it on my blog, but since I spent the weekend in Bowling Green at this nice book fest, I'll say something now. 9—4 on Sat. Sat between two very nice gentlemen: Marvin Jarboe, illustrator of several books including My Sailor Dad; and, another gentleman whose name's escaping me now. He was a sub-in so he's not in the program. But, he introduced me to everyone he knew.
I was also on an illustrator's panel with Indianapolis illustrator Adam Seif (no link yet), Susan Eaddy, clay illustrator (who sold out), and Dennis Calero, X Men comic book artist (follows me on twitter). Even though I majored in writing along with art, I've never been very good at picking out

the literary stuff. I just know what I like, and I loved Blue.

If I had never heard Joyce read aloud from her book at our Highlights Foundation workshop, I would have still found the narrator's voice in my head drift into that easy North Carolinian accent crafted by Joyce's own southern perspectives.

Bravo: writing an entirely character-driven story. This is truly a gift. There's no hint of a struggle to stay in the "showing" mode and avoid the "telling" mode in this book.

I was swept into the story by Ann Fay's honesty with herself, and challenge to be the "man of the house" while her father was away to war and polio overtook her town of Hickory, NC.

To me, the book was about growing up, and having to grow up way too fast; learning that adults don't always get it right, and that even your mom and dad aren't always as strong as you may need them to be.

Comfort, the sequel to Blue, is now out. Yes. Others have created art for this story, including Jerry Pinkney, but I'm going to do it too. Here, you see three thumbnails for my first frame. This part in the story takes place after the family in the bungalow has saved Rikki from the torrent and now he's sleeping (to his mother's horror), right on the pillow with little Teddy.

I usually say that no one can understand my thumbnails but me. I thought you might like to see it."

A few weeks ago, I asked my cousin Lois, who has recently "retired" from the Bay Area to Mazatlan to help establish Hospice there—to send me some of her work. She's taken up painting again. The light. Ah!

I guess my grandma was the one who started it all. I have this piece (horses) in our bedroom. I didn't find out until she was gone that this is done in soils from the south. She loved the south and wouldn't have come back north I guess, if it weren't for the war and my grandfather's need for employment.

I've been looking at that picture my whole life.

Kansas State is my Friend

My publisher informed me yesterday that I've made the Kansas State Reading Circle 2009 Recommended Reading List. To grab attention. To offer something of value to students from grades 1 through 6. And, I connected with many cool and very friendly people who are great writers and generous souls.

  ...reason numbers 3 through 9.

Read all you can from Joyce Moyer Hostetter, rising star in the YA market. Here's her blog.

Google alert Anne Greenawalt. She's finishing a book, Thigh Flashers, about Spartan women in the Olympics—300-something B.C. She's in final edits; she's got an agent; she's sure to be published; and if nothing else, she's very sweet. Also, check out her book of short stories, Growing Up Girl.

Take a look at Mary Corcoran's science book, The Quest to Digest (Parent and Children's Choice Awards). She has another coming out soon about the circulation system. Here explanations about science in the body are perfect for classroom use and her illustrator, Jef Czekaj, is fanatastic.

And also, among the published, is Carol Murray. She's a poet who knows it.

Deb Rossi is concerned with character education, and didn't wait around for anyone to catch up. She's published her own book for kids, No Horsing Around, and is talking to guidance counselors to get her program into schools.

Seems Melissa Starr can write about anything, and is serious about a couple of novels. She is also working on a series of picture books using Aunt Agnes as a backdrop for the antics of an apparently never ending stream of precocious nieces and nephews. Aliens..ants..'nuff said.

All these fine people are now trained and ready for school and library visits, so sign them up!

Attending the Highlights Illustrators' Party

I was very pleased to be invited to Highlights Illustrators' Party the first part of Oct. '08. Highlights owns Boyds Mills Press and Front Street, my imprint is part of that.
So, I ventured off to Honesdale, PA via NYC. Yes. They had a van picking up illustrators there, so I opted for a little tour time in the city before being driven out for the big part-ay.

Let me say, the Highlights people treated us like Kings and Queens. I was very taken with their hospitality and generosity.

This was a full-weekend event beginning early Fri. evening at the Founders' House with a barbecue under a tent. We moved on to more eating with great breakfasts and lunches and a pig roast. There was even a square dance, a costume party, (theme: The Enchanted Forest--here I am as an Ent with a hobbit riding in my branches) and an art show of our work. All this against the backdrop of John Sandford's artwork from The Terrible Hodag and the Animal Catchers.

But most important, I got to meet all these great illustrators from the magazine to the other imprints such as Calkin's Creek, Highlights and BMP. We had a fantastic presentation by Leonard Marcus about the history of the Caldecott which led to a great Q/A and discussion. Following, we all laid out our portfolios and took a look around. Wow! is all I can say. A bit humbling.

I met Floyd Cooper and lunched with him, talking about school visits and contracts.

I also finally met my fantastic art director, Helen Robinson, face to face. I told everyone she's a great art director because she let me do what I wanted. But really, she's very secure in her own creativity and role as not to need to thumbprint the books she's working on. I've found that to be the case in the marketing/design field where I've encountered plenty of that.

A near meeting with my publisher/editor, Stephen Roxburgh--but we had to turn the car back in order to make my ride back to the airport. A big disappointment.

But, otherwise, a great time was had by all. ;-)

So, This is Like, Robot Art…?

I’m finding that some folks want to categorize what I’m doing as “not quite there” or “cheater” artwork. As if I’m tapping into some vast database of images and just assembling pictures. It makes me remember that once an individual said to me, regarding the electric organ in our church, that it wasn’t really music they were creating since there were no pipes and no air running through those pipes.

Hmm. So, then should we say that photographers are not artists either, since they aren’t painstakingly creating photographic replications of their subjects with pen/ink or some other hand medium?

The art first exists in the idea.

I don’t put myself out there as someone who sees the world in a vastly different light and am then compelled to create art to help the un-seeing see it all through my lens. I just like pictures. I like to make pictures. I’m fairly pedestrian. I’m not abstract and my work is not esoteric. OK, I’m a kiddie book artist.

Then, the idea has to get onto paper (or a screen, or a canvas…)

Once I have an idea, I then figure out how to make it tangible and hope others will like to look at it too. Yes. I consider others. I don’t treat my work as something just for me. I hope even, that I can sell it! I think that getting it out of your head and onto a visual surface is what every art maker must learn to do (this is skill and craft)—even photographers; even digital artists.

Thanks for reading.

Considering Digital Art

Though there is a lot of control doing digital art, there are a couple of considerations. For instance, a file that I’ve spent 20 hours on could become corrupt—the digital information go awry and the file possibly not even open up. I save and save often. I also back up while I work so that if something goes wrong, I may only have to go back in time a few steps rather than start over.

Another is a lack of original artwork. The art resides on a disc, which can be printed and re-printed. Lacking original artwork, I had to find a source to print out every piece and supply that to the publisher. You see, they usually send original artwork to the printer. After films and plates are made from that, the art is kept next to the press so they can compare what’s coming off the press with the original to be sure everything is right. I had to supply prints for them to do that with. I was basically saying,
“I approve this color, so match this.”
I had to do that because every output device will vary its color from every other.

But, maybe to solve the lack of original artwork problem, I could have one final set printed on great paper, then sign each piece and put them under glass. Then I can christen those pieces A/P (artist’s proof) and be able to point to those as the originals.

Thanks for reading.

How'd You Do That?

When people see my book, Drive, the first thing they generally ask is
“What medium is this done in?
“It’s all digital,” I say.
I usually receive a blank look.

It’s computer art. But that doesn’t mean I type into the computer,
“draw a big red truck,”
and voila: a big red truck.

I’ve had well-meaning folks press me on the issue if I am really doing art, since I get a lot of help from the computer. That’s actually the topic of my next entry. Here, I’d like to talk about the real process first and give you a look inside.

First of all, these pictures are not 3D renderings like Toy Story, Cars, etc. These are my drawings that are, well—painted on a computer. Each one is an original creation rather than a camera shot within a 3D scene. Call them Digital Airbrush paintings, if you will. See more.

In college, I struggled through two airbrush classes. I actually enjoyed the second one more, since I approached it as a free-form method. Airbrush, you see, is very tedious. You have to mask out everything that isn’t getting painted. Then, re-mask and paint the next object. The airbrush constantly gets clogged with dried paint and either stops working or splatters. If it splatters, your painting could be toast.

The computer has replaced all that with color blending and gradients within shapes.

That’s enough lead-in. Here’s how it worked. Once I had a story ironed out, I thumb-nailed a storyboard. Then, I found people who were willing to model for each character and had them pose for the camera. My brother was the model for the trucker. His son (my nephew, of course) was the inspiration for the towheaded boy; my mom was the café waitress.

Research is very important. I have several people to thank. I photographed Mack trucks several times to get the details correct. One day I spent in, out and around a truck owned by a friend, Tom. I also visited a Mack dealership where the actually pulled a truck out of the row and let me get into it and shoot it all around. Also, the sales manager, Terry looked at my story a couple of times to make sure that the story I was telling was plausible. I also have to mention my friend Jerry, who was once a driver. He also consulted.

Another fun thing I did: I bought 2 scale models of Mack tractor-trailers—one with a box trailer and one with a tanker. I set up dioramas and shot those too. Using my shots of people and blending them with my dioramas, I did my tight drawings. This is how I visualized many aerial views of the truck.

After my publisher saw these pictures and gave the nod, I scanned them and used them as templates for my final artwork.

I use a program called Adobe Illustrator. Maybe you’ve played around with a pen tool in a drawing program. That’s the same tool I use. Everything, every detail, is a shape. Then, I choose color and fill the shape. It can't end there, though. If so, it would have a flat graphic appearance. I wanted all the subject matter to have form, shadow and highlights. To get that, I had to create blends—one color gradually changing into another. But the coloring on objects doesn’t always just blend from one to another in a straight line like it’s following a T-square. Colors can meander around. For these instances, I created gradient messes within the shapes. This function creates a mesh work all through the shape (with as many meridians as I determine) with a point at each intersection in the mesh. Then, I assign a color to each point and the colors blend outward from that point and into the next color point. It’s a way to create more of a free-form appearance.

None of it is easy, if you’ll allow me to say so. It’s like trying to master any other medium such as pencil, pen and ink, a brush with oils or a brush with watercolors. It’s in fact, another medium altogether. The computer's job is to respond to the commands I set up for every point (and there are thousands) in every picture.

So, why the computer and not watercolor? It’s one approach that I’ve tried that caught the eye of a publisher. There’s not a lot of it out there in the children’s market yet. There’s plenty of 3D (which is tough enough as a medium, don’t misunderstand), but not a lot of people doing this kind of work. This approach may be seen more in the general market. Tomatoes on a jar of spaghetti sauce, something in a magazine, but not so much in kids’ books.

A second reason is that watercolor is a very popular medium in the children’s market and I wanted to do something different. And, since my topic was about something mechanical, it seemed fitting to use a mechanical illustrating medium. However, I’m thinking of another book in this style about vegetables…

A really big reason is: CONTROL. I have total control over my picture. I can color and area, change the color numerous times, until I feel like it looks right. That’s a lot harder in oils and almost impossible in watercolors. Watercolors for instance, are transparent, and you can’t just paint over an area you want to change. If you wanted to change a blue midday sky to yellow-y sunset, you can’t just paint yellow over it, it would turn green. And, if my art director asked me to redo an area, or make something bigger, I had total control over that. In a painting, particularly a watercolor, I would have been stuck basically starting over.

Thanks for reading.

Why Am I Here, Anyway?

I am a first-time published author/illustrator for a kids’ book, Drive. And also, keep up with new kids’ book offerings coming out or in the works.

I've spent the last five years illustrating any number of different things: book covers, technical references, spot work for websites...but have always had the goal of illustrating at least one book for kids in my life.
